TRIO – Upward Bound Math and Science (TRIO – UBMS) is a program that encourages and supports high school students interested in going to college and majoring in the STEM fields.

What TRIO – UBMS PROVIDES
TRIO – UBMS offers numerous opportunities to help high school students, particularly low-income and first-generation college bound students, to maximize their academic experiences to become successful once they go on to college. The program offers a vast array of support, from tutoring and counseling to college tour trips and summer activities.
TRIO – UBMS SERVICES
- Exposure to academic programs and cultural events
- Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
- Academic, financial, or personal counseling
- On-campus tutoring
- Mentoring programs
- Information on postsecondary education opportunities
- Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
- Assistance in college entrance and financial aid applications
- Information on Federal Student Financial Aid programs and benefits
ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
- Monthly trips to a university, career awareness workshop, cultural event, or community service organization
- Weekly Lunch & Learn events – with topics such as financial literacy, career exploration and readiness, etiquette, and scholarship writing strategies. Featuring guests such as university recruiters.
- One-on-one tutoring and academic assistance throughout the school year.
- College tours in and out-of-state
- Community service and engagement projects
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
- Six-week program at San Antonio College
- Two-week STEM Lab Research program at the University of the Incarnate Word for select students
- Simulated college environment
- Instruction in math, science, technical writing, foreign language, and college readiness
- Leadership and team building activities
- Tutoring and counseling services
- Programs to boost academic and social skills
- TRIO Academic Bowl competition with students across San Antonio
- Six hours of college credit for graduating seniors paid by TRIO-UBMS for select students
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The program is open to students attending Edison and Highlands High School in the San Antonio Independent School District and meet the following requirements:
Be a U.S. Citizen or legal resident
Be a rising 9th/10th grade student
Either:
First generation student (neither parent has a four-year degree_
Come from a low-income household (as defined by the Department of Education. Their guidelines can be found at http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/incomelevels.html
